Tanzania Allocates Over TZS 280 Billion to Enhance Power Supply Reliability in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam — January 6, 2025

The Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has said the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has invested more than TZS 280 billion in various electricity projects to ensure a reliable power supply in Dar es Salaam.

Hon. Ndejembi made the statement on January 6, 2025, during an inspection visit to key electricity receiving and cooling substations at Gongo la Mboto, Kinyerezi I Extension, and Mabibo, all located in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking during the visit, the Minister noted that Dar es Salaam is among the country’s largest electricity consumers, emphasizing that the Government’s investment aims to guarantee stable power for households and industries—thereby supporting economic growth.

“Dar es Salaam is among the areas with the highest electricity consumption in the country. If you look at our current power generation, nearly 750 megawatts are used in Dar es Salaam alone. This Government investment is intended to ensure a reliable supply of electricity for households and industries so that they can continue to grow,” said Hon. Ndejembi.

He further explained that the investment is also designed to reduce dependence on a single substation and to expand the number of substations, ensuring continuity of supply even in the event of technical faults.

“The Government’s objective is to establish a ring circuit system in Dar es Salaam, so that when electricity is unavailable on one side, it can be supplied through an alternative route. This will enable residents of Dar es Salaam and surrounding areas to enjoy reliable power at all times,” he added.

Meanwhile, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the TZS 280 billion investment in Dar es Salaam forms part of the more than TZS 15 trillion allocated by the Sixth Phase Government for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution projects nationwide.

“The President has directed us clearly—she does not want the electricity sector to be seen as an obstacle to people’s development. We thank her for enabling us, and these efforts are ensuring that electricity remains a key driver for business, investment, and service delivery,” said Mr. Twange.

The Minister’s visit is part of his ongoing nationwide inspection tours aimed at assessing progress of electricity projects and ensuring their timely completion, so that Tanzanians continue to benefit from reliable electricity services.
