Set in the Ngorongoro Highlands, Empakaai is encircled by steep green slopes rising about 300 meters, rich with indigenous vegetation, wildlife, and an impressive diversity of birdlife. The crater spans roughly 8 km across, with nearly half of its floor occupied by a deep soda lake (magadi)—a vital habitat for flamingos and other water birds.
From the crater rim, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley, and Lake Natron—a panoramic scene that defines northern Tanzania’s dramatic landscape. Whether you choose a scenic nature walk along the rim or descend to the crater floor, Empakaai offers a truly immersive wilderness experience.
With elevations reaching approximately 3,200 meters on the western side and 2,590 meters on the eastern side, the crater is often wrapped in mist—creating an atmospheric backdrop where the lake can appear emerald green or deep blue depending on the light.

Empakaai is especially loved for its walking safaris, typically a 2.5-hour round-trip hike (depending on fitness level). Along the way, guests enjoy close-up views of the lake and explore the dense highland forest within and around the crater.
Best Time to Visit
Empakaai is open year-round, but the most popular season is June to December (dry season), when visibility is at its best and hiking conditions are ideal.
