The session was attended by the Deputy Minister, the Permanent Secretary, senior Ministry management, and heads of institutions under the Ministry.

Serengeti, Tanzania – March 8, 2026 The Government of Tanzania has announced the allocation of TZS 8.1 billion to repair roads and bridges damaged by heavy rains in Serengeti National Park, a move aimed at restoring critical tourism infrastructure and improving visitor safety. The announcement was made by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), during an inspection visit to the park to assess the impact of the recent rainfall, which has been linked to climate change effects. According to Dr. Kijaji, the funds will support urgent repairs of key transport infrastructure within the park after several tourist vehicles were stranded due to flooded crossings and damaged roads. “We will release the funds immediately so that repair works can begin as soon as possible and ensure smooth movement for visitors and park operations,” the Minister said. Dr. Kijaji also urged tour guides and drivers to strictly follow instructions issued by Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) rescue teams stationed in affected areas. “Attempting to cross bridges while water is flowing over them endangers the lives of drivers, tourists, and vehicles,” she emphasized. The Minister also criticized misleading reports circulating on some media and social media platforms suggesting that Serengeti National Park had suspended tourist activities, warning that such misinformation could harm the country’s tourism industry and national revenue. Meanwhile, TANAPA Deputy Commissioner for Conservation and Business Development, Massana Mwishawa, welcomed the government’s commitment, noting that the rehabilitation works will ensure the park’s infrastructure remains accessible throughout the year, regardless of seasonal rains. He added that improved infrastructure will support Tanzania’s goal of attracting eight million tourists by June 2030, in line with the vision of President H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Chief Park Warden of Serengeti National Park, Assistant Commissioner of Conservation Ismail Omary, said the park had already taken emergency measures, including temporary road and bridge repairs, rescue operations for stranded vehicles, and providing accommodation for visitors and drivers affected by the floods. “We also waived overstay fees for visitors whose travel plans were delayed due to the damaged roads,” Omary said. The rehabilitation budget will cover repairs and reconstruction of several key structures, including Upper Orangi Bridge, Lower Orangi Bridge, Banagi Bridge, Bona Bridge, Naabi Hippo Crossing, culverts along the Naabi–Seronera road, and other sections affected by the heavy rains.

The call was made by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), during the Prime Minister’s public meeting with residents of Longido District in Arusha Region. Dr. Kijaji noted that communities surrounding legally protected areas, including Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA), continue to benefit significantly from conservation initiatives. She revealed that during the 2024/2025 financial year, Enduimet WMA generated TSh 1.3 billion, while Longido District Council received more than TSh 700 million from photographic and hunting tourism activities. Dar es Salaam | 20 February 2026 — Tanzania’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has expressed satisfaction with the country’s electricity generation capacity, noting that total installed production has reached 4,400 megawatts (MW), significantly surpassing current national demand of 2,071 MW. The remarks followed an oversight visit by the Committee to key energy infrastructure projects in Dar es Salaam, including the Ras Kilomoni Power Transmission Station to Zanzibar and the Kinyerezi I and II Natural Gas Power Plants. Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Subira Mgalu, praised the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for its effective implementation of strategic energy projects and for steering the utility toward financial sustainability. “We commend TANESCO for the successful execution of power projects. Incidents of power outages have significantly declined, and there is currently no load shedding. The next priority should be ensuring electricity reaches the end consumer, particularly in industrial and mining zones,” Hon. Mgalu stated. The Committee further acknowledged ongoing efforts to strengthen transmission infrastructure, including the expansion of high-voltage lines from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to Chalinze, and onward from Kinyerezi to Mkuranga, an area with a high concentration of industrial activity. Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Eng. Innocent Luoga, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to meeting the national target of 8,000 MW of electricity generation by 2030, in line with the vision of President H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. He noted that electricity demand continues to grow, particularly in productive sectors, and that the Government—through TANESCO—is working to connect approximately 1.7 million new customers annually to expand access and support economic transformation. During the visit, the Committee also toured the Ras Kilomoni Transmission Station, which has the capacity to transmit 205 MW of electricity to Zanzibar. According to 2025 data, Zanzibar’s peak demand stood at 140.4 MW, reflecting adequate supply margins. The Committee’s findings highlight Tanzania’s continued progress in energy security, infrastructure expansion, and industrialization-driven power sector growth.
