  • History is often measured not by grand declarations, but by the moments when geography, economics, and political vision converge. The three-day State Visit of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to Tanzania from 8–10 June 2026 was one such moment. Official ceremonies, state banquets, bilateral meetings and business roundtables are often viewed as routine features of diplomacy. Yet some visits carry significance beyond protocol. President Tharman's visit, the first ever by a Singaporean Head of State to Tanzania, appears to be one of those moments. As Tanzania and Singapore mark 45 years of diplomatic relations, both countries are signalling something larger than friendship. They are signalling strategic intent. What is unfolding in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar is not merely a celebration of past relations. It is the beginning of a conversation about the future.

Young bajaji drivers refueling their three-wheelers at a compressed natural gas (CNG) station in Dar es Salaam as part of Tanzania’s clean energy transport initiative. Young bajaji (three-wheeler) drivers across Tanzania are reporting significant economic benefits following the adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) systems in their vehicles, citing reduced fuel costs and improved operational efficiency. According to data from the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), as of 4 August 2025, more than 5,000 bajajis nationwide had transitioned to clean CNG fuel. At that time, the country had established eight CNG refueling stations, including a high-capacity facility in Dar es Salaam capable of serving up to 1,200 vehicles per day. In a move aimed at accelerating adoption, the Ministry of Energy removed Value Added Tax (VAT) on CNG stations and eliminated selected taxes on equipment used for converting vehicles — including bajajis — to natural gas systems. The policy reforms are intended to encourage greater uptake of clean energy in the transport sector. Infrastructure expansion has continued steadily. As of 24 September 2025, Dar es Salaam had 11 CNG refueling stations, with plans to increase to 18 stations within the year. A Government statement issued on 9 February 2026 further confirmed that more than 15,000 vehicles nationwide are now powered by CNG. By January 2026, the country had 11 operational CNG stations (9 in Dar es Salaam, 1 in Pwani, and 1 in Mtwara), with projections to reach 20 stations by June 2026. The Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the investment environment and expanding CNG infrastructure nationwide, ensuring that the clean energy transition directly benefits citizens — particularly youth engaged in urban and intercity transport services. The initiative aligns with Tanzania’s broader energy diversification strategy and its commitment to sustainable, cost-effective transport solutions.
