Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, on January 27, 2026, marked her birthday by planting a mango tree (Mangifera indica) at Bungi Kilimo in the South Unguja Region, reaffirming her commitment to environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, and climate action.

The symbolic tree-planting activity forms part of ongoing national efforts to promote environmental stewardship and the protection of natural resources, while also encouraging citizens to take part in climate-friendly initiatives that support food security and ecological sustainability.

President Samia, who was born on January 27, 1960, in Kizimkazi Village, South Unguja Region, Zanzibar, has consistently used her birthday to champion causes that contribute to national development and the wellbeing of present and future generations.

Speaking during the meeting, Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Dr. Richard Muyungi, said Tanzania is keen to adopt Djibouti’s model, leveraging its strategic assets, including the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga and international airports, to enhance regional cooperation. Longido, Arusha – Residents of Longido District have been called upon to protect the ecosystem of the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area (WMA) to ensure continued economic and environmental benefits from conservation. The call was made by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), during the Prime Minister’s public meeting with residents of Longido District in Arusha Region. Dr. Kijaji noted that communities surrounding legally protected areas, including Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA), continue to benefit significantly from conservation initiatives. She revealed that during the 2024/2025 financial year, Enduimet WMA generated TSh 1.3 billion, while Longido District Council received more than TSh 700 million from photographic and hunting tourism activities. The Minister emphasized that these revenues demonstrate the direct economic value of conservation to local communities. She therefore urged residents to continue cooperating with the Ministry in protecting the ecosystem from destructive activities such as livestock encroachment, bush fires, and poaching. “Conservation is not only about protecting wildlife; it is about improving livelihoods and ensuring sustainable development for present and future generations,” she stressed. Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, in Same District. Dr. Kijaji emphasized that the Government, under the leadership of President H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has significantly improved compensation rates for citizens affected by wildlife-related incidents. She further noted the introduction of a digital payment system designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, and timely disbursement of funds to beneficiaries. “Conservation is for the benefit of citizens,” Dr. Kijaji affirmed, underscoring the Government’s commitment to ensuring that communities living near conservation areas derive tangible economic and social benefits.
