Dar es Salaam, 08 February 2026 – The Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Hon. Angellah Jasmine Mbelwa Kairuki (MP), held talks with the Chief Executive Officer of the East African Communications Organization (EACO), Ms. Caroline Koech, to discuss ongoing telecommunications research initiatives within the East African Community (EAC).
During the meeting, Ms. Koech outlined EACO’s core mandate, including conducting research across the communications sector aimed at addressing shared challenges among EAC Partner States. The studies focus on strengthening regional cooperation, improving service delivery, and enhancing regulatory and operational frameworks in the telecommunications industry.
Among the key research areas highlighted was the issue of forced roaming, which affects citizens living in border areas who unintentionally connect to mobile networks from neighboring countries. This situation often results in higher communication costs for affected users.
Hon. Minister Kairuki commended EACO for its continued collaboration with national communications regulators and service providers across EAC member states. She encouraged the organization to intensify research efforts to generate practical and sustainable solutions to existing cross-border connectivity challenges.
The engagement reflects Tanzania’s commitment to regional integration and the advancement of affordable, accessible, and efficient communication services within the East African Community.
