Dar es Salaam | 20 February 2026 — The Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), has formally received copies of the Letters of Credence from the Ambassador-Designate of Hungary to Tanzania, H.E. Ms. Katalin Nyirati.
The presentation ceremony was followed by high-level discussions focused on advancing Tanzania–Hungary bilateral relations, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding cooperation across key sectors, including education, agriculture, water resources, and civil aviation.
A central outcome of the engagement was the anticipated renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding to extend the scholarship programme enabling Tanzanian students to pursue higher education in Hungary for the 2027–2029 cycle. The renewed framework is expected to increase the number of beneficiaries under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship from the current allocation of 30 students under the 2023–2026 arrangement.
In the water sector, Tanzania and Hungary are preparing to finalize agreements aimed at completing the Biharamulo water project, through which Tanzania will access advanced Hungarian expertise and technologies in water treatment and distribution systems. The two countries also explored expanded collaboration in civil aviation to strengthen institutional and technical partnerships.
In agriculture, Hungary will collaborate with Sokoine University of Agriculture through academic exchange and technical cooperation initiatives designed to build a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting major national and international development projects.
Minister Kombo congratulated Ambassador-Designate Nyirati on her appointment and assured her of Tanzania’s full cooperation and support in the execution of her diplomatic mandate.
The engagement underscores Tanzania’s continued commitment to strengthening partnerships with European partners through constructive diplomacy and sector-focused collaboration.
