Vice President Nchimbi Delivers President Samia’s Condolences After Passing of Cardinal Pengo

Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi meeting Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Ruwa’ich at the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam to convey President Samia’s condolences following the passing of Cardinal Polycarp Pengo.

Dar es Salaam | 20 February 2026 — The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, has formally conveyed condolence messages from H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, following the passing of His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, Archbishop Emeritus of Dar es Salaam.

The Vice President paid a condolence visit to the residence of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam in Kurasini, where he met with the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, His Grace Jude Thaddeus Ruwa’ich (OFM Cap.).

During the engagement, Dr. Nchimbi stated that President Samia was deeply saddened by the loss and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to stand in solidarity with the Catholic Church and the faithful during this period of mourning.

He emphasized that the Government recognizes the late Cardinal Pengo’s exceptional contribution to both the Church and the nation over 42 years of episcopal service, noting that arrangements would ensure he is accorded full honours in recognition of his distinguished legacy.

Archbishop Ruwa’ich expressed gratitude to the Government for its support, particularly during the late Cardinal’s medical treatment.

His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo passed away on 19 February 2026 at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam.
