Tanzania Commissions Landmark Kishapu Solar Power Project, Adds 50MW to National Grid

Kishapu, Shinyanga | 21 February 2026 — Tanzania has reached a historic milestone in its energy transformation agenda with the completion of the Kishapu Solar Power Project, the largest grid-connected solar facility ever developed in the country.

The project will inject 50 megawatts (MW) into the National Grid by 1 March 2026, strengthening power supply reliability, particularly across the Lake Zone regions, and marking a significant step in Tanzania’s renewable energy expansion strategy.

Following an inspection of the facility, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, described the achievement as a defining moment in the nation’s post-independence energy development.

“This is a new chapter in our country’s energy history. For the first time since Independence, Tanzania has completed a solar power project of this magnitude connected to the National Grid,” Mr. Twange stated.

The first phase of the project was implemented at a cost of TZS 118.6 billion, financed through a partnership between the Government of Tanzania and the French Development Agency (AFD). The Government reaffirmed its commitment to diversifying energy sources under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Driving Regional Growth and Energy Stability

Kishapu District Commissioner, Hon. Peter Masindi, noted that the project is expected to accelerate economic growth in the region, especially in mining and agriculture key sectors that depend on stable electricity supply.

Acting Plant Manager, Eng. Mariana Mrosso, added that the facility will enhance grid stability and improve electricity quality for consumers, particularly in Tanzania’s Lake Zone.

Phase II Expansion to Add 100MW

TANESCO has commenced final procurement processes for Phase II, which will add an additional 100 MW at an estimated cost of TZS 200.4 billion, further strengthening the country’s renewable energy portfolio.

The Kishapu Solar Power Project symbolizes Tanzania’s strategic shift toward clean and sustainable energy, reinforcing national energy security while supporting long-term socio-economic development.
