Kilombero, Morogoro | 24 February 2026 — Kilombero Sugar Company Limited hosted Hon. Prof. Kitila Alexander Mkumbo, Minister of State in the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), during an official visit to review the company’s ongoing strategic investments and performance.

Prof. Mkumbo was accompanied by senior Government leaders, including the Director Generals of TISEZA and the Tanzania Sugar Board, the Kilombero District Commissioner, and other Government representatives.

During the visit, the delegation received a comprehensive briefing on Kilombero Sugar’s operational performance and toured strategic investments valued at over TZS 987 billion—notably the K4 Sugar Factory Expansion Project and the K3.1 Distillery Expansion Project. The delegation also inspected key implementation milestones and progress achieved under each investment.

The visit was hosted by Kilombero Sugar’s Managing Director, Mr. Guy Williams, together with the company’s leadership team.

Kilombero Sugar reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to strengthen investment facilitation and support sustainable growth across the national sugar value chain.

In addition, Mr. Ben Chouia conveyed an invitation for Tanzania to participate as the Guest of Honour at the Fourth Africa Bee Expo, scheduled to take place in Algiers, Algeria, from 3–6 September 2026. He also encouraged Tanzanian public institutions, private sector actors, and individual stakeholders to take part in the event. Ambassador Matinyi expressed his appreciation to the Africa Bee Expo Organization for the distinction accorded to Tanzania through both the Guest of Honour invitation for 2026 and the proposal to host the continental event in 2028. He affirmed that the Government of Tanzania would give due consideration to the invitations in recognition of the significant contribution of the beekeeping sector to national development, employment creation, and economic growth. The sector currently provides livelihood opportunities for approximately two million Tanzanians and contributes substantially to the national economy. Mr. Ben Chouia commended Tanzania for its remarkable achievements in beekeeping and apiculture products, noting that the country has emerged as one of Africa’s and the world’s leading producers, making it a deserving candidate to host the prestigious continental exhibition in 2028. The Africa Bee Expo serves as an international platform that brings together entrepreneurs, researchers, experts, and practitioners in the beekeeping industry. The event promotes knowledge exchange, innovation, conservation, sustainable production, and market opportunities for honey, beeswax, and other bee-related products. The high-level meeting, held on April 29, 2026, in Cairo, brought together energy ministers from 13 member states to strengthen cooperation and advance the development of a unified regional electricity market. Tanzania was represented by the Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, who joined counterparts in deliberating key policy and operational frameworks. A major outcome of the meeting was the designation of Egypt as the permanent host of the regional electricity market operations center, a critical step toward establishing a fully functional and integrated power market across Eastern Africa. The session was chaired by Mahmoud Esmat, who emphasized the importance of unity, transparency, and collaboration among member states in achieving a sustainable and efficient regional energy system. The Council also approved a two-month extension for member states to finalize ratification of cooperation agreements between governments and national electricity utilities, ensuring smoother implementation of the regional power framework. In addition, Ethiopia was endorsed to assume the rotating chairmanship of the Council, in line with EAPP governance principles. Commenting on the outcomes, Hon. Makamba described the resolutions as a significant milestone in transforming cross-border electricity trade and strengthening the regional energy market. She was accompanied by Richard Makanzo, Styden Rwebangila, Anthony Mbushi, as well as experts from the Ministry of Energy, TANESCO, and EWURA. The meeting marks a critical step toward enhancing electricity trade, strengthening regional cooperation, and promoting sustainable energy development across Eastern Africa.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said the project will accelerate economic growth by addressing long-standing challenges, including aging port infrastructure, energy constraints, and high fuel costs. The US$300 million project, expected to be completed by 2028, will feature a modern port capable of handling large container vessels, fuel storage facilities exceeding six million liters, and 200 megawatts of power generation capacity. The development is anticipated to significantly reduce energy costs and attract new investments. In addition, the project includes the establishment of a strategic oil and gas storage facility through a partnership between One Petroleum Company and the Zanzibar Ports Authority, alongside infrastructure development by Puma, Gapco, and Zanzibar Petroleum (ZP). President Mwinyi assured communities affected by the project of fair compensation, while commending their cooperation in enabling the implementation of this landmark development.

Government officials and industry leaders meeting during CTI Iftar event in Dar es Salaam discussing industrial sector reforms DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — The Government of Tanzania has pledged to enhance the business environment for industrial stakeholders, signaling potential tax reforms and policy adjustments in the upcoming national budget. The assurance was made by Deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Laurent Luswetula, on behalf of the Minister for Finance, during an Iftar event organized by the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) in Dar es Salaam. The event brought together government leaders and industry stakeholders to assess challenges, align strategies, and accelerate growth in the industrial sector. Hon. Luswetula said the government is actively reviewing proposals submitted by industrial stakeholders, noting that the private sector remains a key partner in shaping industrial and economic policy. He revealed that over 60 percent of recommendations submitted by industry players in the previous year were implemented in the 2025/2026 financial budget, demonstrating the government’s responsiveness to private sector input. The Ministry of Finance has also received new proposals focusing on taxation and production costs, with some taxes expected to be reduced or eliminated to ease the burden on businesses and consumers. “The government values your contributions. We have received your proposals and will work on them carefully to deliver reforms that strengthen the economy for both industrialists and citizens,” Luswetula said. He added that the final budget proposals will reflect market realities and aim to improve the competitiveness of local industries. The Deputy Minister emphasized that President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision is to continue improving the business and investment climate to attract both domestic and foreign investors. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Hon. Dennis Londo, said the government will continue working closely with CTI to ensure policies and programs support industrial resilience and economic transformation. He highlighted that industrialization remains central to Tanzania’s economic strategy, serving as a driver of job creation, value addition, and export competitiveness in regional and global markets. The government will continue strengthening infrastructure and ensuring reliable energy supply to support industrial growth. On his part, CTI Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Leodgar Tenga, noted that the dialogue aimed at strengthening the industrial sector to boost economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the production of competitive goods.

Speaking during his working visit to Kilombero District in Morogoro Region, where he toured the sugar processing facility, Prof. Mkumbo emphasized that the large-scale investment has generated substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities. Industrial Sector Key to Youth Employment The Minister underscored the importance of the industrial sector as a driver of national economic growth and a catalyst for expanding job opportunities for young people, especially those with professional and technical expertise. He noted that major investments of this scale not only increase the production of essential commodities such as sugar but also stimulate growth across related sectors, including sugarcane farming, transportation, and distribution services. Tunduma/Nakonde Border | 23 February 2026 — Tanzania and Zambia have successfully resolved five out of ten non-tariff barriers (NTBs) that had been causing significant truck congestion and trade disruptions at the strategic Tunduma/Nakonde border, marking a major step toward enhancing regional trade efficiency in Southern Africa. The breakthrough follows a high-level bilateral good-neighbourliness meeting held at the border, co-chaired by Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of Tanzania, and Hon. Mulambo Haimbe (MP), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Zambia. 24-Hour Border Operations Under OSBP Framework Addressing the media after the meeting, Minister Kombo announced that Zambia has agreed to introduce 24-hour service operations in line with the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) framework. The decision is expected to significantly reduce cargo clearance delays and decongest freight traffic at one of the busiest trade corridors in the region. Modern Cargo Scanning and Digital Integration Zambia also committed to operationalizing a modern cargo scanner supplied by the Government of Tanzania to accelerate inspection processes and improve efficiency in goods clearance. In a further boost to technological cooperation, both countries agreed to integrate their customs management systems — Tanzania’s TANCIS and Zambia’s ASYCUDA Plus — to facilitate seamless data exchange, enhance transparency, and strengthen cross-border trade coordination. Tanzania has unveiled an ambitious plan to position itself as a regional hub for transport, logistics, manufacturing, and trade, as part of a sweeping medium-term development strategy aimed at boosting productivity, job creation, and national competitiveness. Speaking in Parliament on 6 February 2026 at the close of its Second Session, Prime Minister Hon. Mwigulu Nchemba said the forthcoming Fourth Five-Year National Development Plan (2026/27–2030/31) will pursue transformational reforms to drive inclusive economic growth, enhance employment opportunities, and reshape performance across the public sector. “The objective is to make Tanzania a centre for transport and the movement of goods, industry and commerce in the African region,” the Prime Minister told lawmakers, adding that the reforms will raise productivity, strengthen regional and global competitiveness, and deepen linkages among key sectors of the economy. The strategy builds on Tanzania’s significant investments in ports, railways, roads, and energy infrastructure, while reinforcing the country’s role as a key gateway for landlocked countries in East and Central Africa. The Prime Minister was presenting preparations for the Government’s Medium-Term Plan and Budget Framework (2026/27–2028/29) alongside proposals for the 2026/27 National Development Plan. Parliament was adjourned until 31 March 2026.
