50MW Solar Project in Kishapu Strengthens Tanzania’s Renewable Energy Drive

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has praised the Ministry of Energy for continuing to implement Tanzania’s strategy of diversifying electricity generation through multiple sources of power.

The commendation follows the committee’s recognition of the 50-megawatt solar power project in Kishapu District, Shinyanga Region, which forms part of the government’s broader plan to expand renewable energy and strengthen the national electricity supply.

Lawmakers noted that the project reflects Tanzania’s commitment to adopting an energy mix approach, combining different power generation sources such as hydropower, natural gas, and solar energy to ensure a more reliable and sustainable electricity system.

The Kishapu solar plant, one of the country’s major renewable energy projects, contributes 50 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, helping increase generation capacity while supporting the government’s clean energy transition.

The project is also expected to play an important role in improving electricity reliability, particularly during periods when hydropower production is affected by changing weather patterns.

Tanzania has been accelerating investments in energy infrastructure as part of broader national efforts to expand electricity access, strengthen power supply stability, and support economic growth.
