Kyela, Tanzania — Heavy rainfall has disrupted marine transport operations in Kyela District, affecting ferry services and raising concerns over passenger safety and logistical efficiency along key water transport routes.
The disruption has prompted the Chairperson of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASHICO) Board to call for the establishment of an emergency docking and operational facility to ensure continuity of services during adverse weather conditions.
Transport Disruptions and Safety Concerns
Persistent rains have led to unfavorable water conditions, making it difficult for vessels to operate safely and reliably. The situation has impacted both passenger movement and cargo transport, with delays affecting economic activities in the region.
TASHICO officials noted that the lack of a designated emergency response infrastructure has exacerbated the challenges faced during extreme weather events.
Call for Strategic Infrastructure Investment
The Board Chair emphasized the urgent need for a dedicated emergency facility that would allow vessels to dock safely and maintain operations even during heavy rains.
Such an investment, he noted, would:
- Enhance transport resilience
- Improve passenger safety
- Reduce service disruptions
- Support regional trade and connectivity
Strengthening Inland Water Transport
Kyela, located near Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi), serves as a critical transport and trade link for surrounding communities. Strengthening infrastructure in the area is seen as essential for sustaining economic activities, cross-border trade, and mobility.
Authorities are expected to explore both short-term mitigation measures and long-term infrastructure solutions to improve the reliability of water transport services in the region.
