Tanzania Calls for Stronger Global Cooperation on Migration at UN Forum in New York

The United Republic of Tanzania participated in the International Migration Review Forum 2026 held in New York, United States, reaffirming its commitment to constructive international cooperation on migration governance and sustainable human mobility.

The Tanzanian delegation was led by the Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Patrobass Katambi, accompanied by the Commissioner General of Immigration, Dr. Anna Makakala, alongside senior diplomatic representatives.

During the high-level engagements, Hon. Katambi emphasized Tanzania’s continued efforts to align its migration governance frameworks with evolving global migration dynamics shaped by international conflicts, climate change, demographic shifts, and global economic transformations.

The forum provided a platform for Member States and stakeholders to exchange perspectives on key migration issues, including rising refugee movements, labor migration, and the importance of harmonizing migration policies and legal frameworks to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration.

Discussions also addressed the intersection between migration management, national security, and the protection of refugee rights and freedoms, underscoring the importance of balancing sovereign security interests with international humanitarian obligations.

Participants further deliberated on the protection of migrants’ human rights, including legal safeguards and humanitarian support for vulnerable and undocumented migrants. Emphasis was placed on strengthening international cooperation and developing people-centered approaches that uphold human dignity and international law.

On socio-economic dimensions, Hon. Katambi noted that migration can contribute positively to economic development, innovation, and labor market growth when effectively managed. He highlighted the importance of fostering social inclusion, community cohesion, and equitable participation in economic opportunities for both migrants and host communities.

The Minister also underscored the growing significance of technological innovation—including big data analytics and artificial intelligence—in strengthening border management systems and combating irregular migration, while reaffirming the need to safeguard privacy, data protection, and fundamental rights.

In addition, Tanzania called for enhanced global preparedness and coordinated international responses to migration pressures associated with climate change and environmental challenges. Hon. Katambi emphasized that strengthened partnerships between countries of origin, transit, and destination remain essential for effective and sustainable migration governance.

The forum further highlighted the importance of expanding legal migration pathways and reinforcing the implementation of international migration agreements as part of a comprehensive and cooperative global migration framework.
