The Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Mwigulu Nchemba, today, May 11, 2026, held talks with the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, Mr. Alvaro Lario, in Nairobi, Kenya, where the two leaders discussed a broad range of cooperation areas in agriculture and economic empowerment.

During the meeting, Dr. Mwigulu reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with IFAD in strategic areas including climate-resilient agriculture, agribusiness development, digital transformation in agriculture, and economic empowerment for youth and women.

The Prime Minister also noted that Tanzania looks forward to continued collaboration with IFAD in implementing agricultural development projects, including initiatives aimed at increasing sunflower production to support the availability of edible oil in the country.

“It has been a productive meeting because we have maintained a longstanding partnership with IFAD, particularly in implementing projects that support productive sectors,” Dr. Mwigulu stated.

“We are also committed to advancing the development of mixed crops, which in the past were viewed solely as food crops. Today, these crops have become commercial commodities and are increasingly contributing to Tanzania’s trade with other countries,” he added.

Dr. Mwigulu further explained that Tanzania intends to expand cooperation with IFAD in the livestock sector as well as in marine resource development projects in Zanzibar.

“In addition, we expect to work closely with IFAD in advancing sustainable agriculture initiatives that support our national campaign to address climate change,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

For his part, IFAD President Alvaro Lario reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring that its programmes and implementation strategies align with the objectives of Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050.

“We are now awaiting Tanzania’s development priorities so that we can identify the most effective areas of support, particularly in food security, food self-sufficiency, and agricultural value addition,” Mr. Lario stated.

Contributing to the dialogue, Prime Minister Nchemba invited investors to capitalize on the improved investment environment created through Tanzania’s 2023 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Act. He emphasized the importance of investing in agro-processing industries to ensure agricultural commodities such as coffee, cashew nuts, and sisal are exported as value-added products rather than raw materials. The Minister also highlighted that Tanzania is preparing for the implementation of the National Development Vision 2050, whose Third Pillar prioritizes environmental conservation and climate change resilience as fundamental drivers of sustainable national development. According to Hon. Masauni, the national commemoration of World Environment Day 2026 will culminate on June 5, 2026, with the Government continuing to mobilize citizens and stakeholders to participate in environmental conservation activities, including tree planting, environmental clean-up campaigns, and the accelerated adoption of clean cooking energy technologies. Planned activities for the commemoration include large-scale model tree-planting and environmental sanitation exercises involving leaders and communities across major cities, including Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mbeya, Mwanza, and Tanga.

Geita, Tanzania | 15 March 2026 — A strategic TZS 50 billion investment in the Mpomvu Power Receiving and Cooling Substation in Geita Region is significantly strengthening electricity supply across Tanzania’s Lake Zone, supporting growing household demand and expanding economic activities, particularly in the mining sector. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals conducted an inspection visit to the facility on 15 March 2026 as part of its oversight mandate to monitor the implementation of key national energy projects aimed at improving reliable electricity access across the country. Parliamentary Oversight and Infrastructure Progress Speaking during the visit, Committee Chairperson Hon. Subira Mgalu stated that the inspection aimed to assess the progress of energy infrastructure projects and ensure that government investments are delivering tangible benefits to citizens. “As the Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals, we are responsible for overseeing the Ministry of Energy to ensure it fulfills its mandate effectively. We are satisfied with the investment made at this station, which plays a critical role in ensuring reliable electricity supply for citizens and economic activities,” she said. The Mpomvu Substation has the capacity to receive and distribute approximately 90 megawatts of electricity, significantly enhancing energy reliability in the region. Authorities are also planning further upgrades to the transmission network, including a dedicated power line for the Geita Gold Mine (GGM). Hon. Mgalu noted that electricity demand at the Geita Gold Mine is projected to rise from 36 megawatts currently to approximately 70 megawatts by 2035, underscoring the importance of strengthening power infrastructure to support industrial growth. Expanding Energy Access Across Regions Deputy Minister for Energy Hon. Salome Makamba emphasized that the Government continues to invest in energy infrastructure in Geita Region due to rapid growth in economic and social activities, especially in the mining sector. “This substation plays a vital role in strengthening electricity supply not only in Geita Region but also in neighboring areas including Biharamulo and Ngara in Kagera Region, Sengerema in Mwanza Region, and Kakonko in Kigoma Region,” she explained. She added that the project has significantly expanded electricity distribution capacity in the region, where current demand has reached 73.64 megawatts. Previously, Geita relied on electricity supplied from Shinyanga Region, with a capacity of only 4 megawatts, which was insufficient to meet the rapidly increasing demand driven by mining and other economic activities. The completion of the Mpomvu Substation marks a major milestone in strengthening Tanzania’s energy infrastructure, supporting industrial development, and improving living standards across the Lake Zone.

The announcement was made by Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Hamad Yussuf Masauni, during his working visit to Mwanza on March 13, 2026. Masauni said the program will be implemented nationwide as part of broader government efforts to strengthen environmental conservation and protection. He stressed that every citizen has a responsibility to safeguard the environment, adding that the government will continue to reward compliance with environmental laws while taking firm action against those who damage the environment. According to the minister, the plan covers a wide range of priorities, including tree planting to combat desertification, expansion of green spaces, city clean-up campaigns, and protection of water sources. He said these efforts will also contribute to reducing disease and improving public health. Masauni also called on investors and all Tanzanians to take environmental protection seriously, warning that the government will not hesitate to act against anyone responsible for environmental destruction. “We all have a duty to protect the environment. If we want a better environment, we must protect it, and if we want it destroyed, then it is we ourselves who destroy it,” he said. Meanwhile, Mwanza Regional Commissioner Said Mtanda said his office is continuing efforts to ensure environmental conservation in the region despite challenges, particularly in controlling noise pollution from entertainment venues. Mtanda also appealed to the Vice President’s Office to intensify efforts to remove water hyacinth from Lake Victoria, saying the invasive plant threatens fish stocks and aquatic breeding ecosystems that are vital to Mwanza’s economy. He noted that 53 percent of Mwanza Region is covered by water, making environmental protection especially important in safeguarding water sources and the shoreline of Lake Victoria to preserve fisheries resources. During the visit, Masauni also toured areas recently affected by flooding, which damaged infrastructure including roads, homes and other property.
