The Government of Tanzania, through the National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC), has launched a specialized training programme for journalists on carbon trading, aimed at strengthening media capacity in reporting environmental and climate-related issues.

The training, held in Dar es Salaam, reflects the country’s growing commitment to sustainable development and participation in the global green economy. Speaking during the opening session, Deputy Minister in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Hon. Reuben Kwagilwa, emphasized the important role of the media in educating the public on climate finance, carbon markets, and environmental conservation. He noted that informed journalism is essential in raising awareness about the opportunities and benefits of carbon trading for communities and the national economy.

The initiative seeks to equip journalists with accurate knowledge and practical understanding of carbon trading systems, enabling them to communicate complex environmental issues effectively and responsibly. Tanzania continues to position itself as a key player in climate action and sustainable environmental management while unlocking new economic opportunities through green investment and carbon financing.

Deputy Minister Reuben Kwagilwa launches Tanzania's preparations for the Nairobi Convention COP12 in Tanga, highlighting opportunities in the Blue Economy and marine conservation. TANGA, Tanzania – July 2, 2026 – The Government of Tanzania has called upon ministries, public institutions, the private sector, research institutions, and civil society organizations to fully embrace the opportunities presented by the country's hosting of the 12th Conference of the Parties (COP12) to the Nairobi Convention, scheduled to take place from October 6–9, 2026. The call was made by the Deputy Minister in the Vice President's Office (Union and Environment), Hon. Reuben Kwagilwa, during the official launch of Tanzania's preparations for the conference in Tanga. Hon. Kwagilwa noted that Tanzania was elected Chair of the Nairobi Convention Bureau for the 2024–2026 term during the 11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) held in Madagascar in 2024 and was subsequently selected to host COP12. He said the conference will review the implementation of the 2024–2026 Nairobi Convention Programme of Work while addressing key regional priorities, including the conservation and restoration of critical marine ecosystems such as mangrove forests, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. The Deputy Minister emphasized that Tanzania continues to prioritize environmental protection and the sustainable management of marine and freshwater resources, including rivers, lakes, groundwater, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems. He further highlighted that Tanzania's Development Vision 2050 identifies the Blue Economy as one of the country's strategic growth sectors capable of driving sustainable economic transformation while promoting environmental conservation and social development. According to Hon. Kwagilwa, Tanzania's extensive coastline presents enormous opportunities in fisheries, maritime transport, renewable energy, tourism, mining, environmental services, and manufacturing, making COP12 an important platform for attracting partnerships, investment, and innovation. Speaking at the event, Tanga Regional Commissioner Ambassador Dr. Batilda Burian warned that climate change is already having significant impacts on marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods. She cited findings from research conducted between 2021 and 2025, showing that average sea surface temperatures in Tanga increased from 25.6°C in 2021 to 28.39°C in 2024, resulting in ecosystem changes that have adversely affected fisheries and seaweed farming. Dr. Burian further revealed that the number of safe fishing days declined from 221 days in 2021 to 170 days, primarily due to stronger winds and increased safety risks at sea, while fish catches have fallen by an estimated 25–30 percent. Earlier, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Environment) in the Vice President's Office, Ambassador Baraka Luvanda, said the conference is expected to attract between 500 and 600 participants, including government leaders, technical experts, development partners, researchers, and environmental stakeholders. He noted that the Government's announcement marks the beginning of comprehensive national preparations aimed at defining Tanzania's priorities and coordinating stakeholder participation to ensure a successful conference. The United Republic of Tanzania is a State Party to the Nairobi Convention, the regional legal framework for the protection, management, and sustainable development of the marine and coastal environment of the Western Indian Ocean. The Convention was signed on 21 June 1985 and is implemented under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The update was delivered during the 5th Specialized Technical Committee meeting organized by the African Union, bringing together energy experts and policymakers from across the continent. Luoga attributed the progress to deliberate government efforts under the leadership of Samia Suluhu Hassan, which have prioritized clean energy access both domestically and internationally. To accelerate this transition, Tanzania has launched the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy (2024–2034), which aims to increase access to 80% of the population by 2034. The strategy focuses on nationwide awareness campaigns reaching communities down to the village level. The government is also implementing subsidies on gas cylinders and improved cooking stoves to make clean energy more affordable.
