The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), held bilateral talks with China’s Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hon. Gao Zheng, on the sidelines of the 126th Session of the UN Tourism Executive Council in Toledo, Spain, to strengthen strategic cooperation in the tourism sector.

During the meeting, the two leaders explored opportunities to advance economic diplomacy through tourism by promoting investment, increasing tourist flows, enhancing knowledge exchange, and leveraging technology and innovation to drive sector growth. Dr. Kijaji reaffirmed that Tanzania regards China as a key tourism market and a strategic partner, expressing the Government’s commitment to expanding collaboration in capacity building, knowledge transfer, and the implementation of mutually beneficial joint initiatives.

The two sides also agreed to deepen cooperation through joint tourism promotion campaigns, strategic investments, and sector development programmes aimed at increasing tourist arrivals, boosting tourism revenues, and strengthening the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between Tanzania and China.

The Executive Council session has brought together Ministers of Tourism, Ambassadors, and senior officials from the 35 member states of the Council to lay the foundation for the implementation of the organization’s new agenda under the leadership of the recently appointed Secretary-General, while reinforcing tourism’s role as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth, social well-being, and sustainable development. Addressing the opening session, UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais unveiled the organization’s 2026–2029 Management Vision, outlining a comprehensive roadmap aimed at strengthening institutional governance, enhancing transparency and accountability, and ensuring that UN Tourism delivers tangible and measurable value to its Member States. According to the new strategic framework, the organization will be guided by three core pillars: building a resilient and future-ready institution, placing Member States at the centre of decision-making and programme implementation, and ensuring that service delivery is driven by excellence, efficiency, and responsiveness to members’ evolving needs. In addition, Shaikha Al Nowais identified four strategic priorities for the 2026–2029 period: strengthening institutional foundations, fostering international partnerships, advancing skills and human capital development, and accelerating sustainability across the global tourism sector. “The first step in this new chapter is to strengthen the foundations of our organization. No priority can be effectively achieved without transparent governance, sound financial discipline, and robust accountability systems,” she emphasized. She further underscored tourism’s critical contribution to the global economy, noting that the sector accounts for approximately 10 percent of global GDP and supports millions of jobs worldwide. She stressed that the industry's long-term success depends on strong institutions, effective governance frameworks, and close collaboration among Member States. Tanzania’s participation in the 126th Session of the UN Tourism Executive Council reinforces the country’s growing influence within international tourism governance and reflects the commitment of the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of President H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to position tourism as a strategic driver of economic transformation, investment promotion, employment creation, and sustainable national development. The meeting also provides Tanzania with an important platform to exchange experiences, learn from global best practices in tourism governance and management, and strengthen international cooperation in areas such as innovation, sustainability, human capital development, and tourism investment. Ashatu Kijaji, led a large-scale mangrove planting exercise along the Indian Ocean coastline in Lindi. The initiative, held at the SIDO area in Lindi Municipality, forms part of the national “Green 27” campaign spearheaded by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, ahead of the International Day of Forests. Speaking during the event, Minister Kijaji emphasized that mangrove restoration is a critical strategy for safeguarding coastal ecosystems and addressing climate change impacts. She highlighted the vital role of mangroves in carbon absorption, shoreline protection, and supporting marine biodiversity, particularly as breeding grounds for fish. Tanzania is home to approximately 158,100 hectares of mangrove forests, making their conservation essential for both environmental sustainability and economic resilience. The exercise saw the planting of 1,020 mangrove seedlings, supported by key conservation partners including the Western Indian Ocean Mangrove Network (WIOMN), EarthLungs, and the Mwambao Coastal Community Network. Committee Chairperson Hon. Timotheo Mnzava (MP) said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving training infrastructure for wildlife conservation professionals in Tanzania. Speaking during an inspection visit to the college, Mnzava noted that the institution plays a critical role in preparing skilled conservation experts who support the country’s natural resource protection efforts. He urged the government to continue strengthening infrastructure at Mweka Wildlife College and other training institutions under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Following the visit, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP) thanked the parliamentary committee for its recommendations, saying the feedback will help the ministry further improve institutions under its supervision. During the visit, members of the committee received detailed insights into the history of human origins and the geological importance of the Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Maasai Mara ecosystems, which form one of the world’s most significant natural heritage landscapes. Dr. Kijaji said the completion of the project marks an important milestone in Tanzania’s efforts to expand its tourism portfolio and promote heritage-based attractions. “The project has been completed 100 percent, and we are now ready to introduce the facility as a new tourism product that will add value to Tanzania’s tourism sector,” she said. Serengeti, Tanzania – March 8, 2026 The Government of Tanzania has announced the allocation of TZS 8.1 billion to repair roads and bridges damaged by heavy rains in Serengeti National Park, a move aimed at restoring critical tourism infrastructure and improving visitor safety. The announcement was made by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), during an inspection visit to the park to assess the impact of the recent rainfall, which has been linked to climate change effects. According to Dr. Kijaji, the funds will support urgent repairs of key transport infrastructure within the park after several tourist vehicles were stranded due to flooded crossings and damaged roads. “We will release the funds immediately so that repair works can begin as soon as possible and ensure smooth movement for visitors and park operations,” the Minister said. Dr. Kijaji also urged tour guides and drivers to strictly follow instructions issued by Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) rescue teams stationed in affected areas. “Attempting to cross bridges while water is flowing over them endangers the lives of drivers, tourists, and vehicles,” she emphasized. The Minister also criticized misleading reports circulating on some media and social media platforms suggesting that Serengeti National Park had suspended tourist activities, warning that such misinformation could harm the country’s tourism industry and national revenue. Meanwhile, TANAPA Deputy Commissioner for Conservation and Business Development, Massana Mwishawa, welcomed the government’s commitment, noting that the rehabilitation works will ensure the park’s infrastructure remains accessible throughout the year, regardless of seasonal rains. He added that improved infrastructure will support Tanzania’s goal of attracting eight million tourists by June 2030, in line with the vision of President H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Chief Park Warden of Serengeti National Park, Assistant Commissioner of Conservation Ismail Omary, said the park had already taken emergency measures, including temporary road and bridge repairs, rescue operations for stranded vehicles, and providing accommodation for visitors and drivers affected by the floods. “We also waived overstay fees for visitors whose travel plans were delayed due to the damaged roads,” Omary said. The rehabilitation budget will cover repairs and reconstruction of several key structures, including Upper Orangi Bridge, Lower Orangi Bridge, Banagi Bridge, Bona Bridge, Naabi Hippo Crossing, culverts along the Naabi–Seronera road, and other sections affected by the heavy rains.
