The Government of Tanzania has called on all public and private sector institutions to capitalize on the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) as a strategic platform to promote the country internationally, boost tourism, attract investment, and stimulate economic growth.
Speaking during an inspection tour of AFCON 2027 infrastructure projects, Dr. Jim Yonazi, Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities) and Chairperson of the National Permanent Secretaries Committee for AFCON 2027 preparations, said the tournament presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to position Tanzania on the global stage.
“AFCON 2027 is more than a football tournament. It is a platform to showcase Tanzania to the world. Every institution must play its part to ensure the country fully benefits from this opportunity,” Dr. Yonazi said.
The committee, comprising Permanent Secretaries from various ministries and heads of government institutions, inspected the progress of key sports facilities, including Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, Major General Isamuhyo Stadium, Law School Grounds, Leaders Club, Gymkhana Club, and Farasi Training Grounds.
Dr. Yonazi emphasized that collaboration across all sectors will be essential to ensuring Tanzania successfully co-hosts AFCON 2027 while maximizing long-term benefits for tourism, investment, business, and national development.
He also directed the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) to develop a dedicated international marketing strategy showcasing Tanzania’s wildlife, cultural heritage, and investment opportunities to the thousands of visitors expected during the continental championship.
Meanwhile, Boniface Tamba, Director of Sports Development at the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, confirmed that infrastructure upgrades remain on schedule. He noted that construction and rehabilitation of roads leading to stadiums and training venues are nearing completion, reflecting Tanzania’s commitment to hosting a successful tournament.
As preparations continue, Tanzania, alongside Kenya and Uganda, is gearing up to host AFCON 2027, marking the first time the prestigious African football tournament will be jointly hosted by three East African nations.
