The Minister for Communication and Information Technology of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Angellah Jasmine Mbelwa Kairuki (MP), has led Tanzania’s participation in the 3rd United Nations Virtual Worlds Day taking place from May 11–12, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Tanzania’s participation reflects the country’s growing role in global discussions on emerging technologies, following its appointment as Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of the Global Initiative on AI and Virtual Worlds — a joint initiative established by the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union.
On the sidelines of the event, Hon. Kairuki held bilateral discussions with the Deputy Secretary-General of the ITU, Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas, focusing on areas of strategic cooperation including governance of emerging technologies, cybersecurity, spectrum management, ICT innovation, and the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
Hon. Kairuki was accompanied by Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Ally Possi, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority.
The participation supports the implementation of Tanzania’s National Digital Economy Strategy by promoting an enabling environment for advanced technologies, smart city development, digital innovation, and inclusive digital services for citizens.
The Government of Tanzania currently serves as a member of the ITU Council for a four-year term, through which the country has benefited from several ITU-supported initiatives, including the GIGA Project aimed at expanding digital connectivity in schools, as well as the establishment of regional innovation hubs.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Tanzania’s Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Angellah Jasmine Mbelwa Kairuki, has officially launched 17 new Airtel Smart Shops in Dar es Salaam, in a move aimed at improving access to communication services and accelerating the country’s digital economy. The launch took place on March 12, 2026 at Goba Centre in Dar es Salaam, where Kairuki praised Airtel Tanzania and its Managing Director Charles Kamoto for continuing to invest in service delivery and bringing modern telecommunications services closer to the public.

She added that the government is implementing the National Digital Economy Strategy 2024–2034, which aims to position technology as a key driver of economic and social development. The minister emphasized that cooperation between government and the private sector remains essential to extending digital and communication services to more Tanzanians.
Airtel has recently expanded its smart shop model in Tanzania, with official and media reports showing broader nationwide rollout efforts designed to strengthen digital access, customer service and financial inclusion.
