ACCRA, GHANA | 22 JULY 2026 — The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has held high-level talks with the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, with the two leaders agreeing to strengthen bilateral cooperation in health, mining, trade and economic development.
The talks took place at Jubilee House, the Presidential Palace in Accra, Ghana, on 22 July 2026, as part of President Samia’s engagements in the country.
During the meeting, President Samia and President Mahama underscored the importance of deepening cooperation in the health sector, agreeing to enhance collaboration and jointly implement initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery and strengthening health systems in both countries.
The two leaders also discussed opportunities for cooperation and knowledge exchange in the mining sector, particularly in the area of artisanal and small-scale mining.
Ghana’s mining sector provides an important example of how mineral resources can contribute to broad-based economic participation. Approximately 60 per cent of Ghana’s mineral production is undertaken by artisanal and small-scale miners, while large-scale mining operations account for about 40 per cent. The model has enabled a significant number of ordinary citizens to participate in and benefit from the country’s mineral economy.
The discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations between Tanzania and Ghana, which the two leaders acknowledged have yet to reach their full potential.
President Samia and President Mahama emphasised the need to inject fresh momentum into economic and commercial relations between the two countries by identifying and expanding opportunities for increased trade, investment and private-sector engagement.
A key development highlighted during the discussions was the growing role of improved air connectivity in opening up new economic opportunities between Tanzania, Ghana and the wider African market.
The launch of Air Tanzania services to the West African region has enhanced connectivity and created a more favourable environment for increased movement of people, goods and business between East and West Africa. The improved air links are expected to contribute to stronger trade, tourism, investment and broader economic exchanges between the two regions.
The discussions between President Samia and President Mahama reflect the shared commitment of Tanzania and Ghana to strengthening South-South cooperation and promoting greater economic integration across Africa.
The two countries are expected to continue exploring practical areas of collaboration that can deliver tangible benefits to their citizens, particularly in healthcare, mining, trade, investment, tourism, aviation and other sectors of mutual interest.
The engagement further underscores the importance of strengthening intra-African connectivity and economic partnerships as African countries work towards achieving sustainable development, greater self-reliance and the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The talks between the two Heads of State are therefore seen as an important step towards unlocking the full potential of Tanzania-Ghana relations and fostering stronger cooperation between East and West Africa.
