Ngorongoro, Tanzania | July 31, 2026 – The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has honoured wildlife rangers and conservation officers who lost their lives, sustained injuries in the line of duty, or demonstrated exceptional bravery and dedication in safeguarding Tanzania’s wildlife, forests, and natural heritage.
The officers were presented with certificates of recognition and cash awards during the commemoration of World Ranger Day, observed annually on 31 July to recognise the invaluable contribution of wildlife rangers worldwide and pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting nature. This year’s event also honoured the memory of 10 Ngorongoro conservation rangers who lost their lives or were injured while carrying out their official duties.
Speaking during the ceremony, Deputy Commissioner for Conservation – Corporate Services, Mr. Aidan Makala, commended the conservation force for its unwavering commitment, professionalism and patriotism in protecting Tanzania’s invaluable natural resources. He urged officers to continue working closely with local communities and other law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law while strengthening community participation in conservation efforts.
Mr. Makala emphasised that conservation rangers serve as the frontline guardians of Tanzania’s wildlife and forest resources. Beyond combating wildlife crime and poaching, their responsibilities extend to protecting water catchment areas, preventing environmental degradation, mitigating human-wildlife conflict, safeguarding lives and property, and promoting public awareness on the sustainable management of natural resources.
Providing historical context to the occasion, Chief Conservation Officer for Protection Services, Mr. Emmanuel Kaaya, noted that World Ranger Day was established in 2007 through a partnership between the International Ranger Federation (IRF) and international conservation organisations. The annual observance serves both to recognise the dedication of wildlife rangers and to honour colleagues who have lost their lives while protecting the world’s natural heritage.
He described the day as a tribute to the courageous men and women who risk their lives every day to ensure that protected areas remain secure and that biodiversity is conserved for the benefit of present and future generations.
Meanwhile, Senior Assistant Commissioner for Conservation, Ms. Gloria Bideberi, announced that the Authority recognised more than 30 employees with certificates of excellence and cash awards in appreciation of their exemplary performance and distinguished service during the 2025/2026 financial year.
The commemorative event also featured a range of recreational and team-building activities, including football matches, fitness exercises, traditional games, and ceremonial parade displays, all aimed at strengthening camaraderie, physical fitness, and esprit de corps among the conservation personnel.
The celebration reaffirmed the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority’s commitment to recognising the dedication, courage and sacrifice of conservation rangers whose service remains fundamental to protecting Tanzania’s globally significant natural heritage and advancing sustainable conservation for generations to come.
